CELL PHONES, IPODS, ELECTRONICS Our students can’t seem to live without having their cell phones, IPods, and other electronic devices out during the school day. Please be aware these items will once again be confiscated this year with more frequency. If the electronic device is confiscated, the parent will have to come in to pick up the device. It will no longer be given back to the student. If a student is uncooperative when asked to turn over their electronic device, additional discipline will be added. Students and parents need to be aware of this new policy. Lost or stolen electronic equipment is the student’s and parent’s responsibility, so please make sure all electronic devices are kept in a safe place. Pennridge High School and the Pennridge School District are not responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices.
PENNRIDGE RESPECT PROGRAM Theme for 2009-10: Give Respect…Get Respect
During our first day class meetings we will once again talk about our Anti-Bullying Program. We call this program PENNRIDGE RESPECT. We hope all students, teachers, and staff show respect to each other by using positive language, actions, giving positive feedback, and recognizing students and staff with our Catch Me at My Best Program.
POWERSCHOOL Parent and Student Portals Available Early October
Last year we had a very successful online communication tool called ProgressBook. This year the teachers will be inputting grades, attendance, and assignments into a new program called PowerSchool. We have changed programs to allow both middle schools and elementary schools to use these same online tools in the future. The middle school will be coming online this year along with the high school. Because of the enormous transition to this new program the Parent and Student Online Portals will not be available until early October. As we did last year, we will be sending out letters to both students and parents with login codes. A step by step tutorial will also be sent with your login to assist you on how to get online. Please pay attention to the Alert Now e-mails for updates.
GRADUATION PROJECT Please note that the graduation project has changed. Students need to select one of the options listed below before their senior year. Option 1: Research project, written report, and presentation linked to the Grade 10 research assignment. Students select a topic of personal interest for their research project. A student selecting this option (which requires an oral presentation) informs the English teacher of his/her choice. Once a satisfactory research paper is submitted (based on the English Department’s standards for a research paper), the English teacher submits the research paper and the student’s Graduation Project Written Evaluation form to their counselor. The student is then scheduled for his/her oral presentation. The student’s presentation may be completed in-class (by arrangement with the teacher, if the topic is relevant to the curriculum) or through an independent panel. This option will not be available after 10th grade. Option 2: Formal Research Project Grades 9 and 10: Students will be able to accelerate the graduation project process during the summer months before their junior year by submitting a formal research project. This project, consisting of a five page research paper in MLA format, must be submitted to the assistant principal in charge of the Graduation project during the months of June through August. An oral presentation to an independent panel will be scheduled during the summer or during the school year. Option 3: Research project that is curriculum-based in acoursetaken by the student in grades 9-11 on a curriculum relevant topic selected by the student. Students would be expected to obtain teacher agreement to serve as the student’s advisor and teacher approval of the topic. The student’s presentation should be completed in class. Option 4: Action research project in an area of personal interest to the student, perhaps in conjunction with an out of- school interest or community-based activity. The student should choose an advisor (who may or may not be a member of the staff) and work with the assistant principal incharge of the Graduation Project. The student prepares a written “actionesearch” report and makes his/her presentation to an independent panel. All students must have their Graduation Project requirement completed by the end of the third marking period of their senior year. If the project is not completed, the student(s) will not graduate with their class and will be placed in a remediation program during the fourth marking period of their senior year and/or summer school. The student will have to pay a fee for this remediation process.
