The process of course selection and schedule development is a critical step in the academic process. Course selection begins in January with presentations to the students by the counselors. All graduation requirements and course prerequisites are discussed thoroughly. Students are given several weeks to discuss their choices with teachers and parents and then submit their decisions. Students are given verification sheets of courses selected at the end of April. Students are advised to meet with their counselor at that time if there are any corrections to be made.
When students submit their course selections a master schedule is developed.
This master schedule has a tremendous impact on numerous academic decisions. The allocation of staff, whether a course will be offered, and resources needed are all derived by the projected course enrollment done during the course selection process. Schedules are given to students in June for the following academic year.
Students are given a deadline of July 19, 2007 to make any schedule changes. For this reason, no student/parent initiated schedule changes will be permitted after June 19, 2007 unless they fall under the following circumstances:
- 6th MAJOR SUBJECT: The 6th major subject may be dropped during the first six days of the course and the subject will not appear on the student’s record. Minimum credit loads must be carried.
- COURSE WITHDRAWALS: Any course dropped after six days of class must be recorded as a WF (Withdrawal Failing) and will appear on the student’s transcript. Minimum credit loads must be carried. The process for withdrawing includes completion of a form by parent, teacher, student and counselor.
- LEVEL CHANGE: Students who request a level change must do so before the end of the fourth cycle (24th school day) of class. ADMINISTRATIVE APPROVAL IS NEEDED.
- ADDING A COURSE: A student may add a course during the first six days of each semester. Any added course must fit into a free period. Please note that schedules will NOT be changed to allow students to leave early or arrive late. Administrative approval is needed.
